Paid MS Opportunity in Insect Pest Modeling – TCBES Thesis Track, Fall 2026
The ʻElala Biodiversity Lab at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo is recruiting a Master’s student for a funded thesis-track position in the Tropical Conservation Biology and Environmental Science (TCBES) program, beginning Fall 2026.
We are especially interested in applicants from Hawai‘i or other Pacific Islands, as the research focuses on developing a robust framework for predicting insect pest emergence across the Indo-Pacific region.
This data-centered project will offer training in:
Advanced ecological modeling and predictive analytics
Wet lab techniques in molecular ecology
Bioinformatics workflows for community analysis
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in entomology, biology, environmental science, geography, or a related field
Valid driver’s license and ability to travel internationally
Desired Qualifications
Experience working with large datasets
Coding proficiency in R or Python
Entomological skills (e.g., keying insects using dichotomous keys)
Ability to conduct fieldwork in challenging conditions
Familiarity with micropipette use and molecular lab protocols
